Oil and Gas

Brightspot supports organizations across the oil and gas value chain, including upstream producers, midstream operators, downstream processors, and integrated energy companies, in quantifying and managing greenhouse gas emissions. We have worked with Canada’s largest producers, LNG proponents, and infrastructure operators, as well as smaller companies, often over multiple years, to deliver facility-level emissions quantification, regulatory reporting, and offset project development.

Oil and gas operations involve a wide range of emission sources and reporting requirements across extraction, processing, and transport systems. Brightspot’s work spans hydrocarbon extraction and processing (natural gas plants, in-situ oil sands facilities, refining, and upgrading), LNG production and export, and pipeline and midstream networks.

We work with operators and project developers to support emissions quantification and regulatory reporting across complex operations, helping organizations respond to evolving requirements across facilities and reporting boundaries.

Key Areas of Support

Verification and Assurance

Independent verification of facility-level, aggregate facility, and corporate GHG reporting, as well as fuel pathway and carbon intensity reporting under TIER, NPRI, OBPS, EPS, and the CFR, supporting audit-ready submissions through coordination with operators and third-party verifiers.

Regulatory Reporting, Quantification, and Compliance

Quantification of facility and corporate emissions and preparation of regulatory submissions across provincial and federal programs, covering upstream and midstream assets such as wells, compressor stations, and processing facilities.

Carbon Intensity and Low-Carbon Fuels (CFR / LCFS)

Lifecycle carbon intensity assessment for LNG, hydrogen, and renewable natural gas, with defined system boundaries and key assumptions aligned to program requirements.

Carbon Markets and Offset Project Development

Development of emission reduction and offset projects, including preparation of project documentation, quantification tools, and support through verification and credit issuance.

Representative Work

Brightspot’s work in oil and gas includes:

  • Verifying annual GHG reports and compliance submissions for large emitters and aggregate facilities, including coordination with operators and third-party verifiers and resolution of material discrepancies.

  • Supporting LNG developments in Western Canada by reviewing emissions estimates, working with engineering teams to identify practical reduction opportunities, and assessing feasible offset pathways.

  • Building and maintaining corporate GHG inventories for upstream operators, integrating data across facilities and identifying gaps or inconsistencies in reported data.

  • Assessing lifecycle emissions for fuel and energy projects, including hydrogen (SMR/ATR with CCS) and RNG systems, using project-specific assumptions and clearly defined system boundaries.

  • Developing offset project documentation and quantification tools, and supporting verification and registry submission for credit generation.
